I was sorting out my secret drawer, chronologically arranging letters and putting stars on the ones that I would read again and again, when I found a diary that I had made myself.

It had accounts of events that had happened to me, some rough blog posts, a few stories, and clippings and letters. I noticed that I used to write a lot better in 2008 than I write now, in 2011. And my blog posts were less of accounts of my day, and more about current affairs and interesting events. I do not find myself qualified to write about current affairs anymore, since I have given up on reading newspapers. So nowadays, I find myself writing about things that are not at all of any interest to anyone. Not even me. Or maybe only me and the people that the posts are about. :/

Ever since I have entered college, I have stopped reading books. In fact, I don't even watch tv anymore. I don't write either. Once in a while, I read things online, that are unrelated to course work, but that too is half-heartedly because I don't like reading things on a laptop screen. Either I watch a movie, or waste my time online. Sob. My attention span has also shortened considerably. I cannot concentrate on anything for too long. Even while writing this blog post, I switch windows to check if the people I am chatting with have replied, or if there is a new email in my various inboxes, or if Facebook has sent me a notification.

Blargh. I hate this. I hate my phone. I feel like throwing it at people. I hate people too. They get mad at me if I haven't called them back after their missed calls or if I haven't checked my msg inbox and replied to them. I hate a lot of people.

Haha I like the ranty nature of this post! It starts with you finding a diary and ends with hating the world =P

But yeah, I know what you mean. Even I haven't read a paper in a year or watched much tv in that time. I did read a book last sem (The Ring of Solomon) but there hardly is any time to read in college.

Which is probably why I still physically write blog posts (whenever I do post, that is).

I have similar complaints with things and people in life. :-/

@Sahil: Wait what, you physically write down blog posts?

I used to do the same too: write about current events, technology, movies reviews...and then I stopped. The first reason is that just like you, I stopped reading newspapers although I kept following specific topics of interest on news websites. I just find it hard to 'browse' through a website in the same way I used to do physical newspapers.

But more importantly, I stopped and asked - who cares? A lot of the search engine traffic probably doesn't unless it a niche topic, and many regular readers will probably just yada yada glance through it.

Posts with a strong personal component however seem to be more fulfilling to write as well as for others to read.

@Ankur: Quite often, yes.

Sahil - Yeah, physically writing down blog posts keeps you away from the annoying notifications on every tab/window.
We have a course this sem called Critical Reading, where we read articles and discuss them. As part of the course, we were asked to submit a book report (but only if we want to) and I took that challenge up because then it becomes an excuse to read a good book.

Longevita - Information Age = Information Overload Age to the point that we all want to switch everything off :(

Ankur - Well that is what I used to do - I would write posts with a strong personal component. But even to do that, I need to read about the current affairs. I have a vague idea, but not enough to rant about anything :/

Very relatable. I haven't read, or at least finished, a book since I entered college, and I don't watch TV either. Free time is spent on laptop, doing random things. It IS very sad.

DUDE DUDE! This is exactlyyyy my situation also. Not reading, being distracted, hating my phone and people and severe addiction to the internet.
Let's go become hermits.

Sam - What did you say in it?

The girl - It seems like everyone has similar complaints. College is evil.

Wild Iris - Let's. And swim in rivers all day long *dreamy look*
